Carnitas Tacos
A classic Mexican dish, our carnitas tacos feature slow-cooked pork in a flavorful mixture, served with fresh toppings.
Ingredients
- β1 pound pork shouldercut into large chunks
- β2 tablespoons lard or vegetable oilfor frying
- β1 medium onionchopped
- β3 cloves garlicminced
- β2 teaspoons cuminground
- β1 teaspoon chili powderground
- β1/2 teaspoon salt
- βchopped fresh cilantrofor garnish
- β4-6 warm tortillascorn or flour tortillas
- βoptional Mexican crema or sour cream

Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute.

Add the pork chunks and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.

Add the cumin, chili powder, and salt. Stir to combine.

Add enough water to the pot to cover the pork, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, until the pork is tender, about 2-3 hours.

Shred the pork with two forks and stir to combine with the juices.

Warm the tortillas by wrapping them in a damp paper towel and microwaving for 20-30 seconds.

Assemble the tacos by spooning the pork onto a tortilla, topping with chopped cilantro, and serving with Mexican crema or sour cream if desired.
