Indian-Style Lentil Dal
A flavorful and comforting Indian-inspired lentil dish made with red or brown lentils, aromatic spices, and a tadka of onions and spices. This recipe is a classic example of a simple and nutritious dal that's perfect for a weeknight dinner.
Ingredients
- ●1 cup Red or Brown Lentils
- ●1 medium Onion
- ●1-inch piece Ginger
- ●1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
- ●1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
- ●1/2 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
- ●to taste Salt
- ●2 tablespoons Tadka (Ghee or Oil)
- ●chopped (for garnish) Fresh Cilantro

Rinse the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.

Add the chopped onion and sauté until it's translucent.

Add the ginger and sauté for another minute.

Add the coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.

Add the lentils and 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until the lentils are cooked.

Heat the tadka in a small pan over low heat. Add it to the lentil mixture and mix well.
