Smoky Chinese Chicken Biryani
A fusion dish that combines the flavors of smoky BBQ and traditional Chinese and Indian biryani. Chicken is marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and spices before being cooked with basmati rice and served with a side of pickled vegetables.
Ingredients
- β1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breastscut into bite-sized pieces
- β2 tablespoons dark soy saucefor marinating
- β2 tablespoons hoisin saucefor marinating
- β1 teaspoon garam masalafor flavor
- β2 cups basmati riceuncooked
- β1 large onionschopped
- β3 cloves garlicminced
- β1/2 teaspoon smoked paprikafor smoky flavor
- β1 teaspoon saltto taste
- β1/2 teaspoon black pepperto taste
Instructions

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add onions and cook until they start to brown, about 5 minutes.

Add garlic and cook for another minute.

Add chicken to the skillet and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through.

In a separate saucepan, heat 2 cups of water over high heat.

Add garam masala and smoked paprika to the water and bring to a boil.

Add basmati rice to the saucepan and stir to coat with the spice mixture.

Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is cooked.

Fluff the rice with a fork and stir in dark soy sauce and hoisin sauce.

To assemble the biryani, place a scoop of the rice mixture in the bottom of a large serving dish.

Top with the cooked chicken and garnish with chopped cilantro, if desired.
