Simple Dal Makhani
A classic North Indian dish made with black lentils and kidney beans in a rich tomato-based sauce. Serve with basmati rice or naan bread.
Ingredients
- ●1 cup black lentilssplit or whole
- ●1 cup kidney beanscanned or cooked
- ●1 medium onionchopped
- ●2 inches gingergrated
- ●3 cloves garlicminced
- ●1 cup tomato pureecanned or fresh
- ●1 tsp garam masalaground
- ●1 tsp cumin powderground
- ●to taste salt
- ●4 cups water

Rinse the lentils and soak them in water for 30 minutes.

Drain and rinse the lentils again.

In a large pan, heat oil over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened.

Add the grated ginger and minced garlic and sauté for another minute.

Add the tomato puree, garam masala, cumin powder, and salt.

Stir well and bring to a boil.

Add the lentils, kidney beans, and 4 cups of water.

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes.

Check the lentils for doneness and adjust the seasoning as needed.
