Saudi Arabian Date Tagine
A traditional Saudi dish featuring tender meat, sweet dates, and aromatic spices, cooked to perfection in a clay tagine.
Ingredients
- β1.5 kg Beef shoulder
- β250g Dates, pitted
- β2 tbsp Ghee or vegetable oil
- β2 medium Onion, chopped
- β2 tsp Ginger, grated
- β1 tsp Cinnamon, ground
- β1 tsp Cumin, ground
- β1 tsp Coriander, ground
- β1/2 tsp Turmeric, ground
- β1 tsp Salt

Preheat oven to 150Β°C (300Β°F).

Heat the ghee or oil in the bottom of a clay or ceramic tagine over medium heat.

Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the ginger, cinnamon, cumin, coriander, turmeric, and salt. Cook for 1 minute.

Add the beef shoulder and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.

Add the pitted dates and enough water to cover the meat.

Bring to a boil, then cover the tagine and transfer to the preheated oven.

Braise for 2 1/2 hours, or until the meat is tender and falls apart easily.

Serve hot, garnished with fresh herbs if desired.
