Classic Algerian Chicken Tagine
A traditional North African dish made with tender chicken, exotic spices, and a flavorful tagine sauce. This recipe is perfect for a hearty dinner.
Ingredients
- β1 1/2 pounds Chicken thighsbone-in, skin-on
- β2 teaspoons Algerian tagine spice blendavailable at most Middle Eastern markets
- β1 teaspoon Exotic spicesa mix of cumin, coriander, and cinnamon
- β2 tablespoons Olive oiluse a high-quality, cold-pressed oil
- β1 large Onionchopped
- β3 cloves Garlicminced
- β1 cup Dried apricotschopped

Heat the oil in the bottom of a clay or ceramic tagine over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Add the chicken to the tagine and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.

Add the Algerian tagine spice blend and exotic spices to the tagine and stir to combine.

Pour in 1 cup of water and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Add the chopped dried apricots to the tagine and continue to simmer, covered, until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce has thickened, about 20-25 minutes.

Season the tagine with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley and lemon wedges, if desired.
