Venezuelan Arepas de Queso
A traditional Venezuelan dish featuring crispy arepas filled with melted cheese and served with a side of flatbread for dipping in a spicy fermented salsa.
Ingredients
- β2 cups Dense Cornmealpreferably Venezuelan cornmeal
- β4-6 pieces Flatbreadfor serving
- β8 oz Fermented Cheesesuch as Queso Venezolano
- β1 cup Corn Kernelsfresh or frozen
- β1 tsp Saltto taste
- β1 cup Wateras needed
- β1 cup Venezuelan Salsastore-bought or homemade

1. Preheat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

2. In a large bowl, mix together the cornmeal and salt.

3. Gradually add in the water, stirring with a fork until the dough comes together.

4. Knead the dough for 5-7 minutes until it becomes pliable and slightly sticky.

5. Divide the dough into 4-6 equal pieces and shape into small balls.

6. Flatten each ball of dough into a disk shape and cook in the preheated skillet for 4-5 minutes on each side, until crispy and golden brown.

7. Meanwhile, slice the fermented cheese into thin rounds.

8. Once the arepas are cooked, split them in half and fill with a slice of cheese.

9. Serve the arepas with a side of flatbread for dipping in the Venezuelan salsa.
