Malaysian Tempeh Bao
A fusion dish that combines the flavors of Malaysia with the ease of a bao bun. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, these buns are filled with sautéed tempeh for a delicious and healthy meal.
Ingredients
- ●1 package (8 buns) Fluffy Bao DoughAvailable in most Asian grocery stores
- ●1 block (8 oz) TempehMarinate in soy sauce and spices before cooking
- ●2 tbsp Vegetable OilFor frying the tempeh
- ●1 small OnionChopped for the filling
- ●2 cloves GarlicMinced for the filling
- ●1/4 cup Malaysian Peanut SauceStore-bought or homemade
- ●1 small CucumberSliced for garnish
- ●1/4 cup Pickled JalapeñoSliced for garnish

Preheat a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the pan and swirl to coat.

Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan and stir-fry until fragrant.

Add the marinated tempeh to the pan and stir-fry until golden brown.

Remove the tempeh from the pan and set aside.

Brush the fluffy bao dough with egg wash and place on a baking sheet.

Bake the bao in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.

Assemble the bao by slicing the tempeh into thin strips and placing them inside the baked bao.

Drizzle the Malaysian peanut sauce over the tempeh and garnish with sliced cucumber and pickled jalapeño.
