Jamaican Braised Daikon with Tagine Spice
A flavorful and comforting side dish that combines the sweetness of daikon with the warmth of Jamaican spices.
Ingredients
- β1 large daikonpeeled and sliced into 1-inch thick rounds
- β2 tsp tagine spice blendavailable at most Middle Eastern or Indian grocery stores
- β1/4 cup, crumbled goeey cheeseoptional, adds a creamy element
- β2 tbsp olive oilfor browning the daikon
- β1 medium, chopped onionfor added depth of flavor
- β2 cloves, minced garlicfor added depth of flavor
- β2 tbsp apple cider vinegarfor a tangy element
- β1 tsp honeyoptional, adds a touch of sweetness
- βto taste saltfor seasoning
- βto taste black pepperfor seasoning

Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Brown the daikon rounds in batches until caramelized, about 5 minutes per batch.

Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.

Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Add the tagine spice blend, apple cider vinegar, and honey (if using). Stir to combine.

Return the browned daikon to the pot and stir to coat with the spice mixture.

Cover the pot and transfer to the oven.

Braise the daikon for 25-30 minutes, until tender and caramelized.

Stir in the crumbled gooey cheese (if using) and season with salt and black pepper to taste.

Note: If using the oven, adjust the cooking time as needed. Alternatively, cook the daikon on the stovetop over low heat, covered, for about 30-40 minutes, or until tender and caramelized.
