Thai-Style Bao with Hearty Filling
A twist on traditional bao, this recipe combines a hearty Ukrainian-inspired filling with the crispy, buttery texture of a Thai-style bun.
Ingredients
- β500g Ukrainian-style ground beefUse 80/20 ground beef for the best results
- β4 Thai-style bunYou can find these at most Asian markets or online
- β2tbsp ButterUnsalted butter adds the best flavor
- β1 OnionThinly sliced
- β3 cloves GarlicMinced
- β2tbsp Soy sauceUse a high-quality soy sauce for the best flavor
- β1tbsp Sesame oilUse a light hand, as this oil can be overpowering
- βto taste Salt and pepper

Preheat the oven to 400Β°F (200Β°C).

Place the buns on a baking sheet and brush with butter. Bake for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown.

In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp of sesame oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking up with a spoon, until browned, about 5 minutes.

Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and cook for 1 minute.

Stir in the soy sauce and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Season the filling with salt and pepper to taste.

To assemble the bao, place a portion of the filling onto the bottom half of each bun, then top with the top half of the bun.
