Classic British Cottage Pie
A traditional British dish made with ground beef, vegetables, and mashed potatoes. This comforting meal is perfect for a chilly evening.
Ingredients
- β1 lb ground beef80% lean
- β1 medium onionchopped
- β2 medium carrotpeeled, chopped
- β3 large peeled, chopped potatoes
- β1/2 cup milk
- β2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- β1 can intensely, buttery, british, tomatodiced, crushed
- β1 cup cottage cheesesoftened
- β1/4 cup buttermelted
- βto taste salt
- βto taste black pepper

Preheat the oven to 350Β°F (180Β°C).

In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium-high heat until browned, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.

Add the chopped onion and carrot to the skillet and cook until they are softened.

Stir in the crushed tomatoes and bring the mixture to a simmer.

Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes.

While the meat mixture is simmering, prepare the mashed potatoes. Peel the potatoes and chop them into large chunks.

Place the potatoes in a large pot and add enough cold water to cover them. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.

Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter, milk, salt, and pepper, and mash the potatoes with a potato masher until they are smooth and creamy.

Transfer the meat mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top of the meat mixture.

Bake the cottage pie in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
