Spicy Ethiopian Kik Alicha Stew
A hearty and comforting Ethiopian stew made with flavorful kik and alicha spices, served with a side of steamed broccoli.
Ingredients
- β2 cups broccolifresh
- β1 cup kiksplit red lentils
- β2 tablespoons olive oilfor sautΓ©ing
- β1 medium onionchopped
- β2 inches gingergrated
- β2 teaspoons alicha spice blendstore-bought or homemade
- β1 teaspoon saltto taste
- β1/2 teaspoon black pepperto taste
- β2 tablespoons niter kibbehethiopian clarified butter
Instructions

Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the grated ginger and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.

Add the kik, onion, ginger, alicha spice blend, salt, and black pepper. Stir well to combine.

Add 2 cups of water to the pan and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 20-25 minutes or until the kik is tender.

Stir in the niter kibbeh and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Serve the kik stew over steamed broccoli.
