Classic British Cottage Pie
A comforting, meat-based casserole made with ground beef and topped with a layer of mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
- β500g Ground beef80/20 lean to fat ratio
- β1 medium OnionChopped
- β2 medium CarrotChopped
- β1 cup PeasFrozen
- β2 large Mashed potatoesDiced
- β1 cup Knotted crumbly breadTorn into pieces
- β1 cup Cottage cheeseOptional topping

Preheat the oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).

Brown the ground beef in a large pan over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks.

Add the chopped onion and carrot to the pan and cook until the vegetables are softened.

Stir in the frozen peas and cook for an additional 2 minutes.

Transfer the meat mixture to a 9x13 inch baking dish.

To make the mashed potato topping, boil the diced potatoes in a large pot of salted water until they are tender.

Drain the potatoes and mash them with butter and milk until smooth.

Spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the meat mixture.

Sprinkle the torn bread pieces over the top of the potatoes.

If desired, dollop the cottage cheese over the top of the potatoes.

Bake the pie in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
