Braised Meal in a Dutch Bowl
A hearty, comforting meal cooked to perfection in a Dutch oven. This recipe combines tender meal with the sweetness of caramelized shallots.
Ingredients
- β1 1/2 pounds meal
- β2 shallotssliced
- β1 dutch oven
- β6 slices crisp lardons or bacon
- β1 bowllarge
- β2 cups water
- β1 teaspoon salt
- β1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1. Heat the lardons or bacon in the Dutch oven over medium heat until crispy. Remove the cooked lardons or bacon from the pot, leaving the grease behind.

2. Add the sliced shallots to the pot and cook until they're softened and caramelized, stirring occasionally.

3. Add the meal to the pot and cook until it's browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.

4. Add the water, salt, and black pepper to the pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover the pot and transfer it to the preheated oven.

5. Braise the meal in the oven for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, or until it's tender.
