German Beef Stew
A hearty German-inspired beef stew made with tender beef shin, vegetables, and aromatic spices. Perfect for a cold winter night.
Ingredients
- β1 pound Beef shincut into 1-inch cubes
- β1 medium Onionchopped
- β2 medium Carrotpeeled and chopped
- β2 medium Potatopeeled and chopped
- β2 tablespoons Tomato pastehomemade or store-bought
- β2 cups Beef brothhomemade or store-bought
- β1 cup Red wineoptional
- β1 sprig Thymefresh or dried
- β2 Bay leavesfresh or dried

Preheat the oven to 300Β°F (150Β°C).

In a large Dutch oven, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat.

Add the beef cubes and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.

Remove the beef from the pot and set it aside.

Add the chopped onion to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the chopped carrot and potato to the pot and cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Add the tomato paste to the pot and cook for 1 minute.

Add the beef broth, red wine (if using), thyme, and bay leaves to the pot.

Return the beef to the pot and bring the mixture to a boil.

Cover the pot with a lid and transfer it to the preheated oven.

Braise the stew for 2 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
