British Sirloin Pie
A hearty British-inspired dish featuring a tender sirloin steak topped with a creamy mashed potato crust.
Ingredients
- β1 (1.5-2 pound) sirloin steakpreferably at room temperature
- β1 large thickly sliced onionsabout 2 cups sliced
- β2 tablespoons all-purpose flouror gluten-free equivalent
- β1 cup milkor heavy cream for a richer flavor
- β2-3 large mashed potatoesabout 2 cups mashed
- β2 tablespoons butterunsalted
- β1/4 cup grated cheddar cheeseoptional

Preheat oven to 400Β°F (200Β°C).

Season the sirloin steak with salt and pepper.

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sear the sirloin steak for 2-3 minutes per side, or until browned. Transfer to a plate and set aside.

In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cook until they're softened and lightly browned.

Add the flour to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly.

Gradually add the milk to the skillet, whisking continuously. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until thickened.

Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the butter until melted.

Transfer the sirloin steak to a ramekin or small baking dish.

Top the sirloin steak with the onion and milk mixture.

Top the onion mixture with the mashed potatoes.

If using cheese, sprinkle on top of the mashed potatoes.

Transfer the ramekin to the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are golden brown and the filling is hot and bubbly.
