Vietnamese Beef Bo Kho
A spicy beef stew originating from Vietnam, rich in flavor and aroma. This dish is served with steamed rice and fresh herbs.
Ingredients
- β1 pound beef chuckcut into 2-inch pieces
- β1 medium onionchopped
- β3 cloves garlicminced
- β2 tablespoons fish sauceadjust to taste
- β1 tablespoon soy sauceadjust to taste
- β1 tablespoon sugaradjust to taste
- β1 teaspoon crushed red pepperadjust to taste
- β2 whole star aniseoptional
- β2 cups beef brothhomemade or store-bought
- β1 cup wateras needed

Heat oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Add beef and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.

Remove beef from pot and set aside.

Add onion and garlic to pot and cook until onion is translucent, about 5 minutes.

Add fish sauce, soy sauce, sugar, crushed red pepper, and star anise to pot and stir to combine.

Return beef to pot and add beef broth and water.

Bring to a boil, then cover and transfer to the oven.

Bake at 300Β°F for 2-1/2 to 3 hours, or until beef is tender.

Season with salt to taste.
