Ethiopian Red Lentil Stew (Misir Wot)
A classic Ethiopian dish made with red lentils, onions, garlic, and spices. It's a comforting and flavorful stew that's perfect for a chilly evening.
Ingredients
- β1 cup red lentilsrinsed and drained
- β1 medium onionchopped
- β3 cloves garlicminced
- β1 tablespoon gingergrated
- β1 teaspoon ground cuminoptional
- β1 teaspoon ground corianderoptional
- β1/2 teaspoon turmericoptional
- β1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepperoptional
- β1 teaspoon saltto taste
- β1/2 teaspoon black pepperto taste

Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the garlic and ginger and cook for another minute.

Add the cumin, coriander, turmeric, and cayenne pepper (if using) and cook for 1 minute.

Add the lentils, salt, and black pepper. Stir to combine.

Add 2 cups of water to the pan and bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 20-25 minutes or until the lentils are tender.

Stir in the misir (red lentil spice blend) and cook for 2-3 minutes.

Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed.

Serve the misir wot hot, garnished with chopped fresh cilantro (optional).
