Beef Stifado
A traditional Greek beef stew made with onions, garlic, and a sweet spicy sauce.
Ingredients
- β1 pound, cut into 1-inch cubes Beef
- β1 medium, chopped Yellow Onion
- β1 medium, chopped Brown Onion
- β3 cloves, minced Garlic
- β2 teaspoons Greek Stifado spice blend
- β1 cup Beef broth
- β1/2 cup Red wine
- β2 tablespoons Tomato paste
- β1 tablespoon Brown sugar

Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook until browned, about 5 minutes.

Remove the beef from the pot and set aside. Add the chopped yellow and brown onions to the pot and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add the garlic, stifado spice blend, and tomato paste to the pot. Cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.

Add the beef broth, red wine, and brown sugar to the pot. Stir to combine.

Return the beef to the pot and bring the mixture to a boil.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 1 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender.

Season the stew with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve the beef stifado hot, garnished with chopped fresh parsley or thyme, if desired.

Serve with crusty bread or over mashed potatoes.
