Classic British Beef Stew
A hearty, comforting stew made with tender beef and rich flavors. Serve with crusty bread or over mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
- β1 1/2 pounds beef stew meatcut into 1 1/2-inch cubes
- β2 tablespoons all-purpose flourfor dredging the beef
- β2 tablespoons olive oilfor browning the beef
- β1 medium onionchopped
- β2 medium carrotpeeled and chopped
- β2 medium potatopeeled and cubed
- β2 cups beef brothhomemade or store-bought
- β1 cup red wineoptional
- β2 tablespoons tomato pasteoptional
- β1 teaspoon dried thymefresh or dried

Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Add the beef and cook until browned, about 5 minutes.

Remove the beef from the pot and set aside.

Add the onion, carrot, and potato to the pot and cook until the vegetables are tender, about 10 minutes.

Add the flour to the pot and cook for 1 minute.

Add the broth, wine, tomato paste (if using), and thyme to the pot.

Return the beef to the pot and bring to a boil.

Cover the pot and transfer to the oven.

Bake for 2 1/2 hours, or until the beef is tender.
