Japanese-Style Beef Gyudon
A popular Japanese beef bowl dish made with thinly sliced beef and onions simmered in a sweet soy sauce-based broth, served over a bed of steamed rice.
Ingredients
- β250g Thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin)Slice beef into thin strips against the grain
- β2 White onionsThinly slice onions
- β2 tablespoons Soy sauce
- β2 tablespoons Sake (Japanese rice wine)Optional
- β1 tablespoon Sugar
- β2 tablespoons Rice vinegar
- β1 bottle Gyudon sauceAvailable at most Asian grocery stores
- β4 servings Steamed Japanese riceCook according to package instructions
- β4 ScallionsThinly slice for garnish
- β1 tablespoon Sesame seedsOptional garnish
Instructions

Heat a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.

Add 1 tablespoon of oil and cook the beef until browned, about 3-4 minutes.

Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.

Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil and cook the onions until they are translucent and starting to caramelize, about 5 minutes.

Add the soy sauce, sake (if using), and sugar to the skillet and stir to combine.

Return the beef to the skillet and stir to coat with the sauce.

Simmer the beef and sauce for 2-3 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.

Season with rice vinegar and gyudon sauce.

Serve the beef and sauce over a bed of steamed Japanese rice.
