Slovakian Pork Dumplings
A hearty Slovakian dish featuring braised pork and homemade dumplings. This recipe is perfect for a chilly evening.
Ingredients
- β1 pound Pork shouldercut into 1-inch cubes
- β1 medium Onionchopped
- β1 tablespoon Caraway seedsoptional
- β2 cups Braised dumpling mixsee note below
- β1 large Eggbeaten
- βto taste Saltoptional
- βto taste Black pepperoptional
- β4 cups Waterfor boiling dumplings
- β2 tablespoons Lard or vegetable oilfor browning pork

1. Heat lard or oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

2. Add the chopped onion and cook until browned, about 5 minutes.

3. Add the cubed pork and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes.

4. Add caraway seeds (if using) and cook for 1 minute.

5. Add the braised dumpling mix, beaten egg, salt, and pepper.

6. Mix well and cook for 2 minutes.

7. Gradually add water, stirring to combine.

8. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.

9. Meanwhile, boil the water for the dumplings.

10. Once the dumpling mixture has thickened, drop by tablespoonfuls into the boiling water.
